During this meeting SAVE will update the Users Group about the progress of SAVE’s GIS activity, Can Kara will deliver a presentation on GIS projects underway or planned with SAVE and their partners. SAVE is launching a new mulching pilot program in the Lefke community on 7 November 2007 to provide a productive and environmentally-friendly way to dispose of the area’s large amounts of trees, branches and shrubbery pruned from local orchards and gardens. To support the program, SAVE has provided a new wood chipper for the community and also trained local community staff on the safe use of the chipper. The wood chipper will be available to area residents with large amounts of garden and orchard trimmings simply by calling 728 7732 and/or 728 7358. Mulching is free. |

All marine turtles are experiencing serious threats to their survival and some species are now considered endangered. Threats to marine turtles include pollution, predation and habitat destruction. Effective conservation must protect turtles at all stages of their life cycle, including nesting and hatching. Three species of marine turtles live in the Mediterranean Sea and two regularly nest on Cyprus’ beaches. SAVE is organizing a public presentation on Wednesday, 31st October 2007, 6:00 pm at J. W. Fulbright Center in Nicosia to highlight the latest in global marine turtle conservation efforts, providing insights into how Cyprus can continue to ensure the survival of these ancient reptiles.

Dipkarpaz Primary School Years 4 & 5 students became “Turtle Biologists for a Day” to learn first hand what it’s like to work and protect the endangered sea turtles that come to Cyprus. Students spent the morning exploring the nesting behaviors of Loggerheads and Green Turtles, identifying turtle tracks, seeing egg chambers, and identifying threats to the turtles. The event was led by Monica Aureggi, international turtle conservation expert from the SAVE Project and the turtle monitoring team based in Karpaz. |
