DAMLAYA DAMLAYA YOK OLUR - DROP BY DROP IT DISAPPEARS
(Public Awareness Campaign on Water Conservation)

Dwindling water supply is a major concern in Cyprus.  The scarcity of water affects day to day life and long term economic growth. Before the situation gets worse, everyone needs to begin practicing specific water-saving techniques that will help mitigate some of the water scarcity problems. You can make a difference!

The SAVE project is implementing a large public water conservation awareness campaign “DAMLAYA DAMLAYA YOK OLUR” to draw attention to critical water issues facing Cyprus, the importance of conserving these scarce water supplies and highlight specific water saving techniques that anyone can use. A little can go a long way toward saving scarce water resources.

The Damlaya Damlaya Yok Olur / Drop by Drop it Disappears campaign emphasizes that all the water we use depletes the water supply.  It provides households with simple, easy-to use water-saving tips for around the home and in the garden and shows how even simple steps save lots of water and make a difference. The campaign was launched on World Water Day, 22 March and is expected to run for six months.

The Damlaya Damlaya Yok Olur / Drop by Drop it Disappears campaign grew out of a public survey of 900 household interviews and 9 focus groups that identified the leading misconceptions about water supply and how most water is wasted around the home. For example, few people understood that all the water they use – whether they drill a well in their backyard, turn on their tap, or buy water from a tanker – comes from the same source and depletes the overall water supply.  As a result this campaign focuses public attention on specific water saving tips that anyone can follow with little or no cost and tremendous savings.  Water Saving tips are being distributed with monthly water bills between April and September 2007.

Information on how to conserve water is available here and through newspaper inserts, banners, schools and the media.

The Damlaya Damlaya Yok Olur / Drop by Drop it Disappears campaign received strong support from local businesses including EVSU, Turkcell, Paralik, Halos Trading Ltd and Mr Pound as well as BRT, local water managers, education authorities, the post office and the football federation. Every bottle of EVSU water features the campaign logo.  Campaign handouts are being distributed through select local stores, such as Hal-Os Trading Company, Tempo Supermarkets(Kyrenia), Lemar Supermarkets (Kyrenia), Starling Supermarket (Kyrenia), Mr Pound Stores and the campaign logo will appear on all new Paralik water tanks throughout the campaign.
