ENVIRONMENTAL AND NATURAL RESOURCES MANAGEMENT

Environment and natural resources management is one of the core activity areas of SAVE.  SAVE works on capacity building to improve the management, protection and promotion of these resources with a strong emphasis on water management given the critical water scarcity issues in Cyprus.  SAVE also works in solid waste management, wastewater management, conservation and protected areas management, and xeriscape landscaping.

Water Resources Management
To help address Cyprus’ water scarcity issues, SAVE provides a wide range of technical assistance and capacity building to better manage the existing water supply from the wells to the taps

Solid Waste Management Existing solid waste infrastructure in the Turkish Cypriot community (TCC) is often inefficient and frequently wasteful.  SAVE focused on pilot projects for small to medium sized communities to demonstrate more productive and cost-effective approaches to handling household waste that could be replicated across the island.

Wastewater Management and Treatment SAVE wastewater efforts address sewerage network and treatment issues.  We are providing assistance in the development of investment strategies for effective and appropriate sewerage systems as well as capacity building in the design of wastewater treatment networks and plants to European Union (EU) specifications.

Conservation and Protected Areas Management SAVE works to existing management and monitoring of the valuable and endangered sea turtle nesting sites in the TCC.

Xeriscape
Landscaping Water-wise approaches to gardening and public parks reduce the demand on limited water supplies, but also serve to improve the appearance and environmental impact of public spaces. SAVE has developed three model “Eco-Parks” and a demonstration garden using only xeriscape techniques adapted specifically to Cyprus’ climate and indigenous plant species.
